Education Minister Chris Hipkins has announced changes to student loan borrowing for long undergraduate programmes in medicine, optometry, dentistry and veterinary science.
From 1 January 2019 students in long undergraduate programmes will be able to apply for an additional three EFTS of Student Loan on top of the seven EFTS life time limit.
Students studying medicine, dentistry, optometry and veterinary science will be able to access a maximum of ten EFTS of study to complete their qualification.
To apply for the EFTS extension a student must be in one of the below long undergraduate programmes:
- Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB)
- Bachelor of Optometry (BOptom)
- Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) or Bachelor of Dental Surgery with Honours (BDS) Hons
- Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc).
We're currently working on the changes required to support this and information on applying for an extension will be on the website later this year.
